Don't leave family farmers out to dry. Finish a 2012 Farm Bill.
This year’s historic drought coincides with a critical opportunity to better prepare farmers and our food supply for the next time disaster hits: the writing of the 2012 Farm Bill. But Congress has failed to act on this urgency, choosing instead to let the current Farm Bill expire on September 30th and compromising the very programs we need to protect our farms from future weather emergencies. Our Congressional leaders are playing politics, leaving critical farm programs to wither away when farmers need them most.
We can’t let this happen. Our food system and the livelihoods of hundreds of thousands of farmers are at stake.
Tell Congress to follow through on their responsibility. Pass a 2012 Farm Bill equipped to meet today's challenges in agriculture - a bill that invests in family farmers, our natural resources and our food supply.
Experts tell us we can expect more intense extremes of weather as our climate changes. Farmers are already preparing for these events – their livelihoods depend on it. Yet, disasters like the current drought show us just how dangerously fragile our short-sighted farm policy has become.
Now is not the time to turn a blind eye to family farmers and our food supply in the name of politics. Tell Congress to finish a 2012 Farm Bill now.
